Flying Angels Christmas Presents in Vancouver – Journalism – Photography

This morning the Mission to Seafarers – Flying Angel Club ( http://www.flyingangel.ca/) and TYMAC Launch Services organized the annual presents to sailors delivery of holiday gifts and presents to crew and staff on vessels on anchor and in port throughout Vancouver. This annual event has been held in different forms by the Mission and Tymac since the 70s and this year was no exception.

Setting off at 9 from the foot of Main Street at the Tymac tug terminal and  am led by Anglican Rev Peter Smyth (Port Chaplain for the Mission to Seafarers), Deacon Dileep  Athaide (Roman Catholic Church – Chaplains) and Stephen David (TYMAC) the teams on two boats made their way to the cargo vessels on anchor in English Bay. Moving from ship to ship and dropping off packages for the crew at each vessel they delivered over 400 presents to the nearly two dozen vessels in the harbor.

For each boat, some of whom were expecting presents and some who were quite surprised the gantry was lowered and the team embarked with bags of presents. Wrapped and encased in waterproof bags these were hand delivered to the ship crew whose smiles were beaming at the surprise. The crew on these ships bring us 90% of everything we own and work for generally 9 months straight with no real time off, something that is felt even more during the holiday season.

Family Day and Bubbles – Vancouver

A non work, or photo or business post, this is all about fun in the sun. I must admit, I haven’t seen that many people with smiles on their faces for a long time!

As my godson in the video said, ” real friends not virtual are the best, and as for chasing bubbles, it’s way more fun than playing xbox at home. ”

Family day has been designated a few years ago as a new statutory holiday in British Columbia, falling on the second Monday in February.  Today Family Day decided to happen on a lovely sunny day with just a little bit of breeze.

Local “Bubble magicians” – as that is the term that best applies – were en force sending small and giant bubbles into the smiling faces of adults and to the delights of the kids who were running to pop them!

I had posted some photos on Instagram but here is the rest of them, a very quick blog entry but it was awesome.

A video and photos below.

Some photos too..

Panama Jungles in HDR

Having gone on a long overdue vacation to the jungles of central america, I had brought a fairly light kit with me including my 11-16 DX Tokina.

I am not a huge HDR fan but for some of the jungle shots I had tried to get the 3 exposure shots and here are the results. Enjoy these while I work on the Faces of Central America collection … coming soon!

Oh yeah the below pictures are pretty big so give them a second to load!

Ballet Magic

Magic of Ballet captured through the lens. I had the pleasure of shooting two beautiful ballerinas from Mexico they have been performing in Vancouver for about six months. I was able to have them do their magic in the studio last weekend and here are the amazing photos. .

For the techies the shots were made with a 6 foot impact umbrella and a 7 foot parabolic umbrella shooting with a d610 and d5100 using a 24-70 lens. For the flash I used an sb900 commander with sb700 and sb600 slaves. For the seven foot umbrella I used two flashes firing simultaneously into it to provide enough output.

Shooting through Glass – Vancouver Aquarium shots

This Saturday was a chance to do some non human photography while exploring the Vancouver aquarium. Most of the below shots I took while hand holding my DSLR and all manual everything (105 and 50 mm lenses) . Worked good for slow moving creatures such as star fish or jelly fish, but manual focus is truly a pain in the butt for birds (even if they are just being carried around by a human.)

Check out some pictures below, from the Vancouver Aquarium

Low Key – with Led Lighting

Last weekend I had a pleasure of working with the beautiful Ann Narky who stroke up some amazing poses and Konstantin who joined her in a few pictures for a couples’ sensual photography shot and then stayed for a couple of candid and head shots).

Their amazing couples shots will be published soon but now for the star of the shoot..Ann

Ann was the star of the shoot – with our goal really focusing on the body and shape and form – a couple of the pictures are attached here. Shooting in the studio was a bit chilly but the camera and the talented model kept going until we ended up with some fantastic pictures.

The setup was a softbox at -2 stops, iso 125, a fill umbrella and a use of my cell phone LED light to add touches of highlights to the body. All shots taken using the Nikon FX with a 24-70 setup.

Red Ivy – Stays Hot in the Fall

A quick upload of pictures from a shoot with a wonderful model, Michelle (  http://www.modelmayhem.com/3526143 ) who can turn from sexy to sultry, to innocent for the camera in a blink of an eye.

Loved doing the test shoot and was able to capitalize on the fantastic fall colors.

For the techies, the setup was fairly simple one… two SB700s shooting into a 72″ umbrella with either the on camera flash of the D610 as a commander  or using the SB910 in commander mode for the brigher outdoor area where there was too much ambient light.

Diagram of the setup for the shot against the wall with the Ivy.

San Francisco and Beyond

This summer I had gone down to Silicon Valley (silicone or silicon?) and had a fantastic time including a trip down through SF and the ocean front areas. On the way back we had stopped in at the Windfarms just east of SF and took some shots.  From fishing in the ocean, to pelicans, and horses to massive wind farms here are some of the photos from that trip.

Supermoon Sunset with vancouver in the background.

Jumped into the car and drove to Jericho near UBC to take some quick shots of the moon (super moon ? blood moon ? ) the MOON. Looking east I could not see it, well that was because with the partial eclipse which was ongoing from the moon rise, it was too under lit by the sun. and looked pale until the sun had set and it became dark enough to really see the moon.

Here are some shots, Jericho / Spanish banks, people getting ready to shoot and some wide angle shots.

I was shooting manual iso 500 – then up to iso 1600 using my sigma 400mm, 105mm f2.5 and 24 f2.8
